Illinois Metalizes McNaughton Orthotropic Deck

Arc spraying the orthotropic deck.

The McNaughton Bridge carries Illinois Route 9 over the Illinois River at Pekin, Illinois.

General Information (Main River Spans):
Two side-by-side independent superstructures, east and west bound.

3 spans, 550’0” center span, 385’0” end spans

Two steel box girder superstructure

Orthotropic steel deck floor system (1/2” deck plate)

Illinois Department of Transportation selected a composite pc concrete overlay (5” overlay thickness). They also wanted additional deck plate protection.

Deck plate protection:

Metallize with 100% zinc.
10 to 12 mils typical thickness
20 mils minimum on corroded areas of the deck plate

A total of 130,144 shear studs were required. In order to avoid damaging the metallizing during shear stud installation, the contractor developed a template of the shear stud pattern. Magnets were positioned on the prepared deck using the template.

The deck and the magnets were metallized. Following the metallizing, the magnets were removed and the shear studs installed in their place.
